Hyūga 日向
Pronounced hyū·ga
The kanji 日向 carry a whole family of readings: hyūga, himuka, himukai, hinata. Hyūga was also the old name of a province in Kyushu — today’s Miyazaki Prefecture — and in Japanese mythology it is the land of the Descent of the Heavenly Grandson. The story goes like this: Ninigi, grandson of the sun goddess Amaterasu, came down from the heavenly plain of Takamagahara to rule the world below — and the place where he set foot was Takachiho, in Hyūga. Japan has a long history of revering the sun, Amaterasu herself, so a word that literally means “facing the sun” carries an intensely sacred air. In NARUTO, the name belongs to the Hyūga clan, bearers of the kekkei genkai Byakugan and one of the great noble houses of the Leaf. And a footnote for fans: Hiashi Hyūga’s line “The Hyūga are the strongest in Konoha” (日向は木ノ葉にて最強) has become an internet meme in Japan.

Quick answers
FAQ
How many strokes is 日向?
10 in total: 日 is 4, 向 is 6.
How do you pronounce Hyūga?
Say it hyū·ga (日向). Japanese has no strong word stress: give each syllable about the same length and weight, and keep the vowels short and clear — a as in “father,” i as in “machine,” u as in “food,” e as in “met,” o as in “go.” A vowel with a bar over it (ō, ū) is long: hold it for two beats.
What characters make up Hyūga?
日向 — 日, then 向. Core meanings from the KANJIDIC2 dictionary database: 日 day · sun; 向 yonder · facing.
Can I use the copied kanji anywhere?
Yes — it's standard Unicode text and works on any modern OS. One caution before you print or ink it: make sure the font is a Japanese one. Some fonts render the same characters in Chinese style, and the difference shows.
