Kamui

Pronounced ka·mu·i

Kamui is an Ainu word: it names a god, a revered spiritual presence. Plenty of manga fans first met the word through Golden Kamuy (2014) — but readers of an earlier generation know that a 1990s manga had already fitted the kanji 神威 to this sound: in Shura no Mon, it appears as the secret technique of the hero's rival. With that history in the back of the mind, a Japanese reader who sees the characters 神威 pictures one thing: a technique that commands awe. In Naruto, it is the dōjutsu Kakashi wields through his Mangekyō Sharingan — an undefendable art that warps its target away into a barrier dimension, boasting, quite literally, the might (威) of a god (神). In time it even comes to clothe Susanoo and its weapons.

Quick answers

FAQ

How many strokes is 神威?

18 in total: 神 is 9, 威 is 9.

How do you pronounce Kamui?

Say it ka·mu·i (神威). Japanese has no strong word stress: give each syllable about the same length and weight, and keep the vowels short and clear — a as in “father,” i as in “machine,” u as in “food,” e as in “met,” o as in “go.”

What characters make up Kamui?

神威 — 神, then 威. Core meanings from the KANJIDIC2 dictionary database: 神 gods · mind; 威 intimidate · dignity.

Can I use the copied kanji anywhere?

Yes — it's standard Unicode text and works on any modern OS. One caution before you print or ink it: make sure the font is a Japanese one. Some fonts render the same characters in Chinese style, and the difference shows.
